To meet clinical, business, and evolving consumer needs, healthcare providers are focused on care delivery that enables innovation in patient engagement, data and analytics, and virtual care. According to Gartner’s 2022 Industry Cloud Survey, about 40% of IT leaders say they have started to adopt industry cloud platforms, with another 15% in pilots; another 15% are considering deployment by 2026.
One of the ways healthcare organizations are moving to the cloud is by adopting digital health platforms (DHP). DHPs enable an architectural approach to rapidly deploy digital capabilities using modern cloud services, supporting, and in response to, the healthcare quintuple aim. The quintuple aim outlines the high-level goals of the industry:
Delivering better patient outcomes
Reducing the cost of care
Improving the patient experience
Improving provider experiences
Health equity
DHPs can also result in a more adaptable and efficient IT portfolio, which ultimately helps healthcare organizations meet their goals. The DHP approach enables Chief Information Officers (CIOs) to adjust their application portfolios at the pace of business change.
Adopting Digital Health Platforms
To support digital transformation initiatives, DHP technologies and services enable healthcare organizations to be more proactive and agile in sourcing and implementing new business capabilities. DHPs are cost-effective and efficient ways to scale new digital capabilities within and across healthcare ecosystems and will eventually replace monolithic electronic health records (EHRs).
According to Gartner’s Marketing Guide for Digital Health Platforms, over the past two years, the DHP market matured, “accelerated by healthcare provider demand for new capabilities to support a more efficient and integrated operating model for clinical service delivery.” New and continued investment by healthcare providers will move toward a modular, interoperable cloud environment for composing and deploying new application experiences rather than historically supporting and upgrading core applications like enterprise EHR.
The Gartner report evaluated thirteen vendors and their ability to meet DHP, including:
Increasing an organization’s resilience, adaptability, and flexibility
A higher return on investment in current applications, infrastructure, and managed services
Delivering better digital experiences for stakeholders, particularly clinicians and patients
One of the vendors included in the evaluation was Salesforce. We believe that Perficient is uniquely positioned to deliver Salesforce platforms and services to our clients. We will first take a look at Salesforce Health Cloud.
Using Salesforce Health Cloud to Adopt a Digital Health Platform
Billions of dollars are lost in healthcare spending each year, caused by breakdowns in the system. To help address this issue, Salesforce is focused on three strategic areas:

Engagement across all healthcare channels
Leveraging Salesforce Health Cloud, we can help improve healthcare outcomes by delivering personalized, digital experiences at scale with a 360-degree consumer view.
In the healthcare provider space, Health Cloud benefits include:
360-degree patient data: Real-time details such as patient profiles, current conditions, appointment history, and care plans including clinical and patient interactions all in one place without the need of swapping screens and devices.
Intelligent care collaboration: With smarter management tools, care teams and providers can easily focus on patients and tasks that need the most attention.
Personalized end-to-end experiences: A secure patient community with drag-and-drop ease that connects the entire care team on any device in real-time.
